Chapter 9

AT DAWN KAYLA left Ryan sleeping in the cottage to go to the barn, where she fed the horses and removed the chains wrapped around Fallon.

“There’s enough room by the lake for you to shift down there,” Kayla told the motorcycle as she walked him out of the barn. “You can hunt for an hour, but you’ve got to stay out of sight.”

Will you ride with me to the water, my lady?

The dragon’s wistful thoughts came with the same surge of loneliness any horse felt when separated from their herd.

“Sure,” she said, and climbed on. “Let’s go.”

Fallon kept his engine quiet as he took her to the lake’s edge, and when she climbed off and backed away he shifted into his true form. This close to him Kayla could see he’d shed some damaged scales, which revealed the jagged scars in his hide. She gently touched one so deep her hand could fit inside it.

“That blast at the faire really did a number on you.”

That is not from the battle, my lady. The dragon stretched out his wings, and made a purring sound of pleasure before he folded them again. It feels good to be released.

Kayla walked around him, inspecting the rest of him and finding a dozen more spots where he’d been scarred.

“Can’t you repair your hide when you shift form?”

That is not permitted. Fallon yawned, and exhaled a small cloud of smoke. Our masters enjoy seeing their marks on us.

“The Blackstones did all this to you?” She felt sick. “Why don’t you just eat them?”

Fallon’s black lips curved up as if he were amused.

Would you have devoured your parent?

“My dad never physically abused me, but okay, I see the point.” A thought occurred to her, and she said, “Is that why you’re being so nice to us? Because you think we’ll hurt you the way they did?”

No, my lady. I merely return your kindness to me. You could never do such things to me or any living thing. Our masters are very different from you.

As the dragon showed her memories of the abuse he and the other dragons had suffered, Kayla staggered back a step. The Dark Fae kept their mounts in filthy underground dungeons, where they were beaten for the slightest show of disobedience. Fallon had taken the most abuse, for he often tried to protect his siblings with his own body. As Kayla watched Dirk whipping him for some mistake, she spotted a small, pale face watching from a cage. Barely old enough to stand, the baby was naked, filthy, and obviously terrified by Dirk’s sadistic punishment. Yet she didn’t make a sound as she watched with haunted gray eyes.

“Tara,” Kayla whispered, horrified.

They left the changeling child in our care, Fallon told her, and showed her another memory of the baby curled up with a sleeping dragon. But we could not protect her from them.

Kayla clamped a hand over her mouth to muffle a cry as she saw a big, craggy-faced man grab baby Tara by the neck and fling her out of his way.
